The British Museum is one of the greatest museums in the world with over five million visitors last year. The museum contains a fabulous collection of classical antiquities, archaeological finds, prints, drawings and coins, gathered from the furthest reaches of the British Empire. There is a complete record of the rise and ruin of world cultures with a collection of six million objects which are displayed in 94 galleries. Displays include Parthenon Frieze (Elgin Marbles), Sutton Hoo treasures, Lindow 'bog' man along with an unparalleled collection of mummies, coffins, funerary statuettes and Books of the Dead in the Roxie Walker Galleries. You can spend an hour or a whole week here. In December, the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court opens. The £100 million development covers the inner courtyard with a glass and steel roof and houses new galleries and a restaurant and a new public piazza. Open Monday to Saturday 1000 - 1700, Sunday 1200-1800 and bank holidays except Xmas and Boxing day 1430 -1700. Admission is free though there may be a charge for special exhibits.
