The Brixton Market is Europe's biggest and best collection of Afro-Caribbean foods and produce. The market was developed outside the BR railway station on Atlantic Road during the 1870s, and ran all along Electric Avenue. After the huge wave of immigration in the 1950s, the market became an important focal point for the black community, and still serves up West Indian specialties such as flying fish, breadfruit and all manner of weird looking fresh meats. Nowadays, the market has expanded to cover several areas of Brixton. You will find stalls selling wigs, clothes, jewellery, knick-knacks and
records. The African and Asian fabrics are also worth a look. Check out the biggest Ghana Yams in London - they're the size of a small child. Minus Points: the usual suspect market
goods - nylon undies, fluorescent pink candy and cut-price electrical goods. Open Mon, Tues, Thur-Sat 0800-1800 and Wed 0800-1500. Admission in free. Brixton Tube
